The Wright Inspiration

It's a little known fact that there is a Frank Lloyd Wright Home in Rockford.  I myself just found out of its existence in the last year. 

Built in 1949 for Mr & Mrs. Kenneth H. Laurent, and it is the only Wright house still occupied by its original owners. This one story Usonian style home was designed to be totally handicapped accessible, as Mr Laurent is wheelchair bound. 

The Laurents have been trying to sell their home for some time now and there is a growing interest in turning this piece of history into a house museum. Doc Slafkosky and Jerry Kortman, my pals at JR Kortman Center for Design have organized a group exhibition of FLW inspired work to bring attention to this treasure in our midst. 15 killer local artists, including moi will be exhibiting work for this show.  I have created 2 pieces.

Both of my pieces feature chairs that Wright designed for the Laurent House. These chairs were part of a lot of furniture auctioned off in June of 2011.  I used my usual paper and Bic pen approach.

“The Wright Inspiration: Art, Design, and the Laurent House” exhibition opens Friday, November 25th with a reception from 5 to 10pm in the Kortman Gallery. Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend this. (Boo! Gallery openings at Kortman's are always a blast!) 


The show will run through the end of the year (I'm not sure exactly when it will come down) and can be viewed any time the store is open.  Store hours are Monday to Saturday, 10am – 6pm, and Sundays (in December) 1 – 5pm.

All of the work in the show is for sale. Art makes a great gift! Hope you can come out and support local artists and a local treasure.

Wedding Invites in the Works

 

Ciao, Ciao!

I've been blog delinquent for quite a while now. February seems to kick me in the butt every year. So much to do during this dreary month.

The wedding is now 3 months away! Matt and I finished up our wedding registries today with a trip to Crate & Barrel. We are both big fans of their overall modernist design sensibility. We had a great time touring around the store with the gun in hand.

We also went into Oak Park to visit the Paper Source.  We picked up all the necessary envelopes and paper so I can get the wedding invites printed and put together. I made a prototype a little while back, which is seen here.  I'm now working on enclosures and a little pocket fold doo-dad to send everything off in.  I'll be sure to post a photo when they are all finished and in final form.

In other news, my show at Kortman's is up until March 19th. Stop by anytime the store is open (10-6 M thru Sat) to check it out.

Go Guide Write Up

I had a nice little write up of my show in the Rockford Register Star this morning. It's fun to see my work in print like this. I'm really looking forward to tonight's opening and being surrounded by friends, family and my art!

Snopocalypse!

After more than a foot of snow and subzero temperatures, school has been closed for the last 2 days. Though it's a little frustrating, (I have so much more material to cover with my AP Art History kiddies before the May 3rd exam!) this mini-break could not have come at a better time. I have been able to finish up 3 more pieces for tomorrow's opening and caught up on my sleep and house work.

I got a sneak peek of the gallery this week and it looks fab! I can't tell you how exciting it is to have an entire room filled with only my art!

Doc Slafkosky, curator of JR Kortman Gallery, wrote a great little explanation of my show and the work on the website. Be sure to check it out.


"In My Place" opens tomorrow, February 4th with a reception from 5:30 - 9:00. Dennis Horton will be tending bar and selections from Anne O'Keefe's iPod will be playing. Hope to see you there!

In just three short weeks, my first solo art show will be up at Kortman's!  I've spent many long (but enjoyable) hours in the studio preparing for this event.

"In My Place" will open on Friday, February 4th, at JR Kortman Gallery and I'd like to invite you to join me in the celebration. Doc and Jerry (the fabulous owners of Kortman's) will host an opening reception from 5:30 - 9:00, upstairs in the gallery. There will be drinks, snacks and just an all around good time. 

The majority of the work in this show will be brand new and never before seen. It's hard for me to keep anything a secret, but I am sure trying to keep much of this show under wraps. If you are dying for a sneak peek, you can see a selection of my newbies on my flickr.

Back to [Art]Work

Greetings friends!

I've taken a hiatus from my online life for the last week. It felt good to unplug, and spend time in my offline life. There were lots of visitors around for the holidays, including Matt's brother Luke from Bulgaria, my brother Kyle from San Diego, and my uncle Matt from San Antonio. Fun times!

The first week of my Christmas vacation flew by, but I did manage to get some art making in. I made wedding invitations for a client and for myself. (More on that coming soon!) I also had time to make a new chair piece.

Meet "What You Love",  an 8" x 8" mixed media work on cradled hardboard.  This piece not available at this time in my Etsy shop, as I'm saving it for my upcoming solo show at JR Kortman Gallery!  This is my first EVER solo show at a gallery, so you can imagine my excitement. The show will go up for the first Friday in February and be up for about a month. I'll pass along more details when I receive them. I'm hoping to debut several new pieces for this show, so I'm trying to make the most out of my free time this week. 

"What You Love" is available as an 8" x 8" archival print in my etsy shop.
