One of the things I miss about being in school is the community of artists I was a part of. If you had a question about your work or were looking for feedback, there was always someone in the studio to consult and bounce ideas off of.
Flickr, Twitter, and Etsy have become my new art community. I'm grateful to have found a group of creative people to learn and grow from in the cyber word.
So I'm reaching out to you about "I've never been to Abilene". I don't know how I feel about this one. I can't put my finger on it, but it needs something, or needs to be edited.
Thoughts? Suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Don't worry, I have a thick skin. Say what you feel.
Ciao!

Class Critique
I've never been to Abilene
8" x 10" on canvas.
Hi Jennifer,
ReplyDeleteIt is nice having the online community, but nothing beats the actual one to one with other people. I think your right about this piece, it does feel like something is missing or not quite right. This piece doesn't seem to "pop" like your other pieces. I feel like part of it might be the gray background, the flowers and stamps seem to get lost a bit in it and don't stand out. Hope this helps.
Tammy
For me the focal point of many of your pieces is the lovely flowers and then the eye is able to move from the around to the other intricate parts of the work.
ReplyDeleteIn this piece there seems to be a competition for the initial focus between that large collage piece in the left corner, the larger flower & the intricate bottom.
Maybe you could try that upper collage piece in the left a little smaller or possibly the upper flower a little bigger to help tell the eye what to focus on first?
The colors are lovely and the collage materials are fun!
I love this idea of an online critique...I miss the group critiques most since leaving school.
ReplyDeleteI think the direction you're taking this piece is great- you seem to be exploring a larger sort of narrative- as 'sweet harvey' said above- with multiple images working in the space. But I also agree about my eye not having the easiest time navigating, which could be due to a lack of strong focal point, or maybe a lack of contrast. I love the gray background color- it has a great ethereal quality- but wonder if you went with a darker color near the bottom (behind the collage elements). This might help ground things, and give more contrast to liven things up.
Can't wait to see how it comes along.
